Cervical Disc Arthroplasty

We know the pain and stiffness in your neck, and even the numbness or weakness in your arm, have been affecting your daily life. One procedure that may help you is called a cervical disc arthroplasty, or disc replacement.

Here’s what that means:
One of the discs in your neck has become damaged and is pressing on your spinal cord or nerves. That’s what’s causing your symptoms. In this procedure, we remove the damaged disc completely and replace it with a specially designed artificial disc. This implant acts like your natural disc — it maintains movement in your neck rather than locking the bones together, which is what happens with traditional fusion surgery.

The advantages of disc replacement are:

·  It relieves pressure on the nerves and spinal cord

·  It helps preserve normal motion in your neck

·  It may reduce stress on the other levels of your spine, which could lower the chance of problems developing there later on

The surgery is done through a small incision in the front of your neck and usually takes about an hour. Most patients are able to go home the same day.

Recovery is generally smooth, and many people notice relief in their neck and arm pain soon after the procedure. Because motion is preserved, you’ll often feel more natural movement compared to a fusion, and most patients return to normal activities within a few weeks.
